Namibia is set to enhance its nuclear energy capabilities through a partnership with Russia’s Rosatom.

A Namibian delegation, led by Minister Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, recently met with Rosatom officials in Moscow. The agency plans to finalize uranium exploration in Namibia by 2026 and aims to begin mining operations by 2029.

Namibia’s Strategic Nuclear Energy Partnership

Namibia is the world’s third-largest uranium producer, making it a key player in the global nuclear energy landscape. The collaboration with Russia aims to leverage Namibia’s vast uranium deposits while reducing reliance on South African electrical imports.

In April of last year, discussions began regarding the establishment of a nuclear power plant in Namibia, signaling a significant step towards energy independence. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Trutnev have explored enhanced cooperation in nuclear energy, emphasizing Namibia’s potential as a regional leader in low-carbon energy.
