“Three Agencies Team Up to Charter Ship for Vital Antarctic Resupply Missions”

In an exciting development for Antarctic research, three European nations have united to enhance their operational efficiency on the icy continent. The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), Norway’s Polar Institute (NPI), and Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) have embarked on a collaborative venture that promises to streamline resupply missions to their respective research stations. This innovative partnership signifies a pivotal shift in how scientific endeavors are conducted in one of the world’s most remote regions.

The centerpiece of this alliance is the ice-capable vessel, Silver Mary. This vessel will be tasked with delivering essential supplies to the UK’s Halley VI station, Norway’s Troll station, and Germany’s Neumayer station over the next decade. The first resupply mission is set to launch in January 2024, marking an important milestone for the collaborative project. Currently making its way to South Africa, Silver Mary, originally known as Mary Arctica, is equipped for dynamic ice operations and can carry containers both in its cargo holds and on deck.

The foundation for this partnership was laid after the successful joint resupply of the Halley station during the 2023-2024 season, which utilized the chartered cargo ship Malik Arctica. Now, NPI will lead the annual voyages, collaborating with BAS and AWI to share the voyage costs, with BAS contributing every other season.

One of the most significant benefits of this partnership is economic efficiency. BAS has pinpointed that this new logistics model not only reduces costs but also falls in line with their goals for enhanced scientific output. The vessel’s use frees up the research ship RRS Sir David Attenborough, allowing it to dedicate 40-60 additional days to research missions across Antarctica, thereby expanding its scientific contributions.

Moreover, the commitment of all three agencies to decarbonization means that utilizing a single vessel for multiple expeditions is a step towards reducing the overall carbon footprint of Antarctic logistics. With funding secured from the UK Natural Environment Research Council, BAS is procuring low-carbon sustainable fuel for Silver Mary, ensuring that more than 40% of its journeys will be environmentally friendly.

Oliver Darke, BAS Director of Polar Operations, Engineering, and Infrastructure, stated, “By combining logistics and sharing skills, we reduce costs, cut our environmental impact, and strengthen the vital exchange of best practice between Antarctic operators. We can deliver more critical science and make Antarctica a safer place by working together.”

The return of resupply operations to the Halley VI station comes after significant environmental changes, including the major calving event of the Brunt Ice Shelf in 2023 that finally made access feasible after several years of disruption. This partnership reflects a promising trend in international cooperation for scientific research, showing how collaborative efforts can tackle both logistical and environmental challenges in some of the world’s most difficult-to-reach areas.
