Celebrating Two Decades of Joy: Cambridge Arts Theatre Prepares for a Mesmerizing Run of 'Sleeping Beauty'
The Cambridge Arts Theatre is abuzz with excitement as it gears up for a special pantomime run of the beloved classic “Sleeping Beauty.” This year is not just about the magic of fairy tales—it’s also a celebration of resident actor Matt Crosby, who marks his impressive 20th year on stage. After a significant refurbishment of the venue, the theatre is poised to enchant audiences once again, starting a new chapter in its vibrant history.
Crosby, a cherished figure in the theatre’s pantomime tradition, will reprise his role as the lovable Nanny Nutkins. Over the past two decades, he has graced the stage in more than 1,200 performances, captivating the hearts of over half a million theatergoers. His vibrant performances have become synonymous with joy, laughter, and sheer entertainment, making him a beloved staple of the Cambridge theatre scene.
Co-chief executives Rachel Tackley and Victoria Beechey expressed their enthusiasm, stating, “For two decades, Matt Crosby has added joy, laughter, and sparkle to The Arts Theatre pantomime. We’re delighted to celebrate this major milestone alongside him—our Dame, who truly is the Queen of the panto!”
Joining Crosby this year is Steven Roberts, returning to delight audiences as Happy Harry. Roberts is fresh off a triumphant performance as Wicked Stepsister Tess in last year’s Cinderella, which garnered him the coveted UK Pantomime Award.
The illustrious cast also features talents from the West End, including the dynamic Tricia Adele-Turner (known for her role in “Stranger Things: The First Shadow”), Matt Harrop from “The Phantom of the Opera,” and Tanisha Butterfield of “Mamma Mia!” fame. New faces will shine alongside these veterans, with Daisy Twells starring as Princess Rose—a role she’s sure to imbue with charm and grace.
This year, Chris Jarvis, a well-known personality from CBeebies and an accomplished writer of pantomimes since 1995, has penned the show’s script. Fans of his work can expect the same whimsical storytelling that has entertained families for years. The direction will be in the capable hands of Michael Gattrell, renowned for his work on successful productions like “Mother Goose” and “Cinderella.”
With the pantomime set to run until January 4, 2026, there’s still plenty of time for families to experience this enchanting production. Tickets and additional information can be found at artstheatre.co.uk.
There’s no doubt that “Sleeping Beauty” will light up hearts and create lasting memories for audiences of all ages. As a city known for its rich cultural tapestry, Cambridge continues to be a vibrant hub of artistic expression, making it a must-visit destination for theatre lovers.
