Zambia's Government Boosts Farming Sector with Significant Funding for Farmers
The Zambian government has taken a significant step to support its agricultural sector by securing 5 billion Kwacha to pay farmers for their maize supplies to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA). This announcement is not only reassuring for farmers but also reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing food security and agricultural productivity across the nation.
Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo shared this positive development, revealing that payments to farmers will commence shortly. “Two billion Kwacha is already available from ZANACO, and we expect an additional 1 billion Kwacha to be released soon,” he stated. This commitment comes in response to the concerns raised by the outgoing President of the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU), Jervis Zimba, regarding the delays in settling payments for maize supplied to the FRA.
During the recent ZNFU 119th annual congress, Mtolo reassured farmers that the government is dedicated to settling all outstanding payments promptly. He emphasized that while there will be no increase in the Farmers Input Support Program, the government plans to enhance the Sustainable Agriculture Financing Facility (SAFF), aiming to create a more sustainable agricultural landscape.
Zimba also took the opportunity to urge the government to expedite the establishment of an irrigation fund, which he believes will significantly boost productivity through enhanced irrigation farming practices. Additionally, he recommended the formulation of a Statutory Instrument to regulate early maize production, facilitating the possibility of exports.
Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata praised farmers for their hard work during the 2024/2025 farming season, highlighting that their efforts have resulted in a bumper harvest. The enthusiasm doesn’t end there, as Chance Kabaghe, the Chairperson of the United Capital Fertiliser Board, affirmed their commitment to empowering farmers by providing affordable and quality fertiliser.
In a noteworthy shift, ZNFU has elected a new executive, with Zvhikonyo Mahombe taking over from Mr. Zimba. This new leadership is expected to continue championing farmers’ interests and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
As Zambia moves forward with this crucial investment in agriculture, it sets a solid precedent for other nations in the region, emphasizing the importance of supporting farmers for national food security and economic prosperity.
