Celebrating a Legacy: A Heartfelt Tribute to a True Friend of Papua New Guinea

Remembering a Pioneer: The Legacy of Tan Sri Sir Tiong Hiew King

In the annals of Papua New Guinea’s history, few figures stand out like the late Tan Sri Sir Tiong Hiew King, founder of the Rimbunan Hijau (RH) Group of Companies. Former Prime Ministers Paias Wingti and Peter O’Neill recently paid heartfelt tributes to Tiong, highlighting his significant contributions to the nation and sharing fond memories of their time together.

Wingti expressed profound gratitude to Tiong for his pivotal role in launching The National newspaper back in 1993. “In just a few months, we had a brand new newspaper – and it is still thriving today,” he remarked. Their partnership was instrumental in establishing one of the country’s leading news outlets, which has continued to inform and shape public discourse for over three decades. Interestingly, Tiong passed away on November 11, 2023—exactly 32 years after the launch of The National, a poignant coincidence that marks his indelible connection to the media landscape of Papua New Guinea.

O’Neill joined Wingti in commemorating Tiong’s legacy, noting his contributions to landmark projects like the Vision City Mall and The Stanley Hotel & Suites. “We remember the impact he had on our nation’s development,” O’Neill said. His ability to align with government policies, particularly in sustainable forest management, is worth noting. Wingti recounted how Tiong embraced initiatives aimed at promoting local industry, including the establishment of wood chip and veneer factories, showcasing his commitment to both economic growth and environmental stewardship.

The RH Group, under Tiong’s leadership, has become one of Papua New Guinea’s largest employers, providing livelihoods for thousands and supporting numerous local businesses. “In challenging times, when many doubted Papua New Guinea’s future, Tiong chose to invest in us. That is the mark of a true friend,” Wingti reflected, illustrating how Tiong’s faith in the nation stood resilient against skepticism.

As friends, families, and supporters gathered to celebrate his life, Wingti thanked the people of Sibu, Malaysia, for the remarkable contributions Tiong made to Papua New Guinea. This legacy of investing in community and fostering growth is a testament to Tiong’s vision and character.

In a world where impactful leaders can profoundly alter the course of history, the story of Tan Sri Sir Tiong Hiew King remains a powerful reminder of the positive change that a determined individual can create.
