Medusa Submarine Cable System Launches: A Game-Changer for Mediterranean Connectivity

In an exciting development for telecommunications, the Medusa submarine fibre optic cable system has officially made its first landing at a cable station in Marseille, France. This monumental milestone not only demonstrates technological advancement but also marks a significant leap forward in connecting Southern Europe and North Africa. The Medusa system, owned by AFR-IX Telecom, is set to revolutionize internet and data accessibility across the Mediterranean region.

The initial segment of the Medusa cable will create vital links between three key locations: Marseille in France, Bizerte in Tunisia, and Nador in Morocco. These first connections are anticipated to be operational between late October and December, laying the groundwork for future expansions that will progress through 2026. The ambitious project will eventually span over 8,700 kilometers and connect 12 countries, including Portugal, Algeria, Tunisia, and Egypt, creating a robust network of 19 cable landing points along the way.

One of the standout features of the Medusa system is its impressive capacity. With segments housing up to 24 fibre pairs, each capable of delivering a staggering 20 Tbit/s, the first phase of Medusa aims to go live by early 2026. This high-capacity infrastructure will significantly enhance data speeds and connectivity for businesses and consumers alike, fostering a more digitally inclusive environment.

Marseille was strategically chosen as the first landing point due to its established reputation as a thriving hub for data centers and critical submarine cable interconnections. This thoughtful choice aims to bolster connectivity initiatives between Europe and North Africa, an objective further supported by co-financing from the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program.

The Medusa project emphasizes its neutrality and independence, operating without preference for any particular operators in the telecommunications sector.
