Lusaka Welcomes a Surge of 9,000 New Voters!

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has recently reported a positive turnout in the ongoing voter registration exercise, with Lusaka Province witnessing the addition of 9,248 new or first-time voters within just four days. This exciting increase was documented from October 13th to October 16th, indicating a strong interest in civic engagement among residents. The announcement was made by ECZ Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Brown Kasaro during a press briefing in Lusaka, assuring the public that the voter registration process is proceeding smoothly.

This initial influx of new voters represents a noteworthy milestone for the Commission, particularly given the concerns expressed by the public regarding registration accessibility. Kasaro emphasized that the ongoing voter registration is being conducted in phases, which helps ensure that the process is thorough and inclusive. While the CEO did not provide specific figures from the remaining districts within Lusaka Province, he expressed confidence that the ECZ is well-prepared to cater to the needs of all potential voters across the nation.

To enhance public awareness about the voter registration exercise, the ECZ has launched a robust publicity campaign utilizing its websites and various media channels. This strategy aims to ensure that every citizen is informed about how to participate in this critical democratic process.

However, some residents have voiced concerns over the availability of registration centers. Shadrick Chimsofuya, a resident from Lusaka’s Kalundu area, highlighted the limited number of registration points, urging the government to consider expanding these facilities to enable more people to register. Similarly, Kenneth Mukanga from Kalingalinga Township pointed out that the registration process could be sped up with the recruitment of additional staff, suggesting that the current pace may hinder some citizens from completing their registration.

As Zambia gears up for its next election, the importance of accessible voter registration cannot be understated. The ECZ’s efforts to bolster participation reflect a commitment to enhancing democracy and ensuring that every voice is heard at the polls. With more initiatives planned to improve the registration process, it’s an exciting time for potential voters in Zambia.
