“Exploring the Thrills of Sports Tourism: Uncovering Zimbabwe’s New Adventure Destination”

Zimbabwe’s Tourism Revival: A Conversation with Deputy Minister Tongai Mnangagwa

As Zimbabwe embarks on an inspiring journey to revive and diversify its tourism industry, one segment emerging as a game changer is sports tourism. This innovative approach combines competition, adventure, and leisure—boosting visitor numbers to breathtaking locations across the country. I recently had the unique opportunity to chat with Honourable Tongai Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry. Our conversation delved into the Ministry’s strategies to harness the power of sports to elevate Brand Zimbabwe while reigniting domestic travel.

The Resilient Road to Recovery

Reflecting on the current state of Zimbabwe’s tourism sector, Deputy Minister Mnangagwa shared a positive outlook: “After facing significant challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic, our tourism industry is on a strong recovery path. Visitor numbers and revenues are increasing, and both local and foreign travelers are regaining confidence.” The government’s ZimBho campaign, aimed at promoting domestic tourism, has sparked renewed interest in the rich beauty of Zimbabwean hotspots like Kariba, Nyanga, Hwange, and the iconic Victoria Falls.

“This initiative has truly changed the mindset of local travelers,” he continued. “It has helped Zimbabweans fall in love with their own country, encouraging families and social groups to explore their national heritage. When citizens enjoy local travel, they become authentic ambassadors for our nation abroad.”

The Rise of Sports Tourism

The Deputy Minister is particularly enthusiastic about the potential of sports tourism. He noted, “With stunning landscapes and facilities perfect for marathons, golf, and outdoor adventures, Zimbabwe is poised to become a prominent player in the global sports tourism arena.” He envisions major events showcasing the country’s spectacular scenery, such as an international marathon in Victoria Falls and mountain biking challenges in the Matobo Hills.

Recognizing the importance of structured growth, the Ministry is collaborating with sports associations to create signature events that will solidify Zimbabwe’s place on the world stage. Recent examples like the ICC T20 World Cup qualifiers and the Rugby Africa Cup have set the stage for further pursuits in this lucrative sector.

Partnering for Progress

The Deputy Minister emphasizes the critical role of the private sector. “Public-Private Partnerships are essential for the innovation and execution required to grow our tourism industry,” he explained. By simplifying processes and promoting collaborative events, the government aims to create an enabling environment that boosts investment in this vibrant sector.

Mnangagwa also stressed the importance of ensuring that local communities benefit from tourism. Sustainable practices are at the forefront of their strategy, ensuring that local guides and vendors are involved in every event. “Tourism should enhance local economies and support community development,” he asserted.

Looking Ahead with Ambition

Looking toward the future, the Ministry’s priorities are clear: strengthening domestic tourism, developing a national sports tourism framework, and embracing digital transformation. These efforts are aimed at marketing Zimbabwe as a top-tier destination for both wildlife and sports—offering diverse experiences that attract travelers from around the globe.

In closing, Deputy Minister Mnangagwa delivered an inspiring message: “Explore Zimbabwe—it’s beautiful, it’s ours, and it’s open to the world. I encourage every Zimbabwean to travel within our borders and support local businesses. Your journeys contribute to our economy and strengthen national pride.”

As Zimbabweans and visitors alike begin to rediscover the treasures this enchanting country has to offer, the potential for tourism in Zimbabwe has never looked brighter.
