In a celebratory atmosphere full of jubilant laughter and shared success, the Zimbabwe Free Range Poultry Association (ZFRPA) marked a significant milestone as it celebrated its 10th anniversary. This pivotal event took place on Thursday, highlighting a decade of remarkable progress in poultry production that has significantly bolstered food security at both household and national levels.

Charging forward with a vision for sustainable agriculture, the ZFRPA has championed the commercialisation and marketing of free-range poultry products across the country. Mrs. Beauty Jiji, the association’s dynamic chief executive, expressed her pride in the profound impact their initiatives have had, especially on rural communities, women, the elderly, and individuals living with disabilities. “We firmly believe in the power of collaboration and innovation to enhance livelihoods and promote sustainable agriculture,” Jiji stated, underscoring the importance of community engagement in these efforts.

Professor Obert Jiri, Permanent Secretary of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, emphasized the significance of the poultry programme as a flagship initiative under the Government’s Rural Development 8.0 strategy. This ambitious plan is designed to enhance food and nutrition security in rural areas, aiming to uplift the living standards of communities throughout the nation.

The innovative Presidential programme aims to distribute 10 chicks per household, promoting good genetics and improving poultry production. “This program has proven vital in enhancing household nutrition and income, especially within our rural communities,” Professor Jiri added, showcasing the government’s dedication to improving the quality of life through better agricultural practices.

Mr. Golden Aaron Shamu, the ZFRPA chairman, proudly recounted the organization’s journey from humble beginnings aimed at making free-range poultry a staple dish in Zimbabwe to a nationally recognized institution that greatly influences the nation’s agriculture sector. “Thanks to our partnerships with entities like Capital Foods and the Zimbabwe Prisons Correctional Service, we have significantly raised production standards,” he noted, adding that the association has received commendations from President Mnangagwa for its innovative initiatives.

The day concluded with a vibrant awards ceremony, where outstanding farmers and industry stakeholders were recognized for their extraordinary contributions to the growth of the free-range poultry sector. Notably, the leading media organization Zimpapers was acknowledged for its extensive coverage of the poultry industry, playing a vital role in supporting the ZFRPA’s mission.

As the ZFRPA celebrates a decade of success, it stands as a testament to the power of community-driven agriculture and sustainable practices. With ongoing support from both governmental and private sectors, the future shines brightly for the free-range poultry industry in Zimbabwe, promising healthier diets and enriched livelihoods for countless families.
