In an inspiring move to uplift local agriculture, James Faleke, a member of the House of Representatives for Ikeja Federal Constituency in Lagos, has announced a substantial support initiative valued at N150 million aimed at farmers in Kogi State. This impactful program is designed to enhance productivity and efficiency within the agricultural sector, bringing renewed hope to local farmers.
During a recent event held in Lokoja, Tunde Arosanyin—an expert associated with Faleke’s agricultural venture—shared exciting details about the initiative. This comprehensive support project is being executed in partnership with the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT) based in Lagos, and Bright-tech Resources Limited, making it a collaborative effort to enrich the farming community.
Launched in June 2023, the project specifically targets agricultural stakeholders across Kogi’s three senatorial districts. Its primary goal is to assist farmers in overcoming challenges stemming from the recent fluctuations in food prices. To that end, the initiative has provided a range of essential inputs, including sprayers, herbicides, high-quality seeds, liquid organic fertilizers, and even cash assistance to help sustain their endeavors.
Moreover, the project goes beyond mere distribution of materials; it encompasses extensive training sessions aimed at enhancing farmers’ skills in crucial value chains, particularly in cassava and fisheries. According to Arosanyin, 165 farmers are set to benefit from this well-structured program, which further includes the establishment of demonstration farms on over 150 hectares of land, equipped with motorized boreholes in select areas.
While President Bola Tinubu’s current policies have made strides in reducing food prices for consumers, Arosanyin highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by farmers attempting to turn a profit. This project is a practical response to that challenge, providing training on best agronomic practices, alongside essential financial support to help farmers recover and thrive.
Farmers like Mohammed Haruna from Lokoja Local Government have already begun to feel the positive effects of this initiative. Haruna praised the training received, stating it has greatly enhanced his understanding of effective farming practices; he expressed gratitude to Faleke for the initiative’s role in bolstering the livelihoods of farmers throughout Kogi State.
As agricultural initiatives like this continue to spring up, they not only aim to remedy immediate concerns but also lay the groundwork for a more resilient and prosperous future for Nigeria’s farming communities.
