“Forging New Frontiers: Zimbabwe and the UK Unite in Scientific Collaboration”

In an exciting development for science and innovation in Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom’s Government Chief Scientific Advisor, Professor Dame Angela McLean DBE FRS, has landed in Harare. This visit marks a significant step forward in fostering collaboration between Zimbabwe and the UK in critical areas such as health, education, climate change, and innovation.

As both nations experience a renaissance in their relationship since the emergence of the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa, Professor McLean’s visit couldn’t come at a better time. With global challenges on the rise, the collaboration in sustainable development, particularly around climate resilience and public health, is more important than ever.

Throughout her stay, Professor McLean is set to engage with key governmental figures, researchers, and innovators. Her itinerary promises a series of high-level meetings and field visits showcasing Zimbabwe’s growing commitment to impactful scientific partnerships. One of the standout events includes her visit to Foundations for Farming, where she will delve into sustainable agricultural practices and explore the innovative Pfumvudza method aimed at revolutionizing farming in the region.

Moreover, her discussions with Professor Fanuel Tagwira, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, will address how to enhance scientific innovation within the education sector. During a roundtable discussion with health and science stakeholders—including representatives from Neotree and the Clinton Health Access Initiative—topics like public health innovations will take center stage.

Additionally, a reception focused on climate adaptation will gather policymakers, scientists, and dynamic youth leaders who are shaping the future of environmental issues in Zimbabwe. Professor McLean will also interact with Dr. Agnes Mahomva, Public Health Adviser to the President, and Professor Stephen Chivasa, a Zimbabwean academic at Durham University, to discuss diaspora-led research initiatives centered on drought resistance and climate resilience.

In her own words, Professor McLean emphasized, “I am delighted to be in Zimbabwe to explore how modern UK-Zimbabwe partnerships can drive progress in climate resilience, public health, and education.” British Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Pete Vowles, echoed this sentiment, declaring, “This visit reflects the UK’s commitment to working with Zimbabwe to build inclusive, evidence-based solutions to the collective challenges we face. From climate-smart agriculture to health innovation, our shared future depends on collaboration.”

With this visit, the UK and Zimbabwe are not just bridging gaps in science and innovation; they are sowing seeds for a sustainable future for both nations.
