Empowering Young Women: Highlights from the IIE MSA Ladies to Legends Event
On August 27, the IIE MSA hosted its annual Ladies to Legends event, where 64 enthusiastic students gathered for an inspiring day dedicated to empowerment and personal growth. This year, the event coincided with Women’s Month, providing the perfect backdrop to celebrate the incredible achievements of women from various fields and backgrounds.
Among the attendees was Azanathi Genu, a second-year law student who resonated deeply with the message of the gathering. Reflecting on her experience, she shared, “Ladies to Legends reminded me of the powerful lineage of women that raised me, from my great-grandmother to my mother. I was especially inspired by Sithisa, who emphasised the power of our habits and how our choices can shape our future. I left with a renewed commitment to authenticity, purpose, and sisterhood.”
The event featured a panel of accomplished women who generously shared their insights on invaluable topics such as leadership, resilience, career growth, and personal development. Notable speakers included Boitumelo Phetlhu, the event MC and a business science honours student as well as the incoming president of the MSA Voice Committee. The panel also featured industrial psychologist Sithisa Magxwalisa-Myeko, head of finance at the Ombud Council and member of CFO South Africa; Devrani Moonsamy, an advocate for financial literacy; and Captain Karen Jacobs from the South African Police Service (SAPS), who focused on leadership development.
Moonsamy stressed the necessity of financial literacy in today’s economy, and Magxwalisa-Myeko championed workplace wellness and the role of everyday habits in achieving success. Captain Jacobs reinforced the importance of resilience and confidence for aspiring leaders, ensuring that students left the event with practical advice they could apply in their careers.
The vibrant discussions and shared stories created an atmosphere of camaraderie and drive, igniting a passion within attendees to pursue careers that not only fulfill their ambitions but also create a positive impact in their communities and beyond.
The Ladies to Legends event showcased the future of leadership in South Africa, shedding light on the importance of mentorship and support among women. Events like this serve as a reminder that the legacy of strong women continues to thrive, inspiring generations to come.
As the participants absorbed the rich insights shared during the event, they walked away more empowered to lead with purpose and authenticity.
