Rising South African Ballet Star Miguel Franco-Green Chooses to Stay Local

Meet Miguel Franco-Green, a 19-year-old ballet prodigy from Alberton, who is making waves in the South African ballet scene. With a passion for dance that rivals his dedication, Miguel has already performed a stunning array of classical and contemporary roles during his two-year stint with Joburg Ballet, consistently showcasing his impressive work ethic and artistic flair.

Miguel’s talents have caught the eyes of international ballet recruiters, with offers pouring in from coveted ballet companies in the UK, Ireland, the USA, and Canada. However, this rising star has chosen to plant his roots firmly in South Africa, prioritizing the growth of his national ballet scene over the allure of international fame. This decision is steeped in a deep sense of patriotism and a strong belief in the vibrant potential of South African ballet. “I want to contribute to the growth and recognition of our local talent,” Miguel explains, highlighting his commitment to nurturing the arts in his home country.

His list of accolades is already impressive. Miguel has wowed audiences as the Chocolate Seller and Golden Flake in Mario Gaglione’s critically acclaimed production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which won a prestigious Naledi Award. Additionally, he has made his mark as a member of the Corps de Ballet and has recently performed in Dane Hurst’s Resonance and the pas de trois in Veronica Paeper’s enchanting Swan Lake.

But that’s not all. Miguel’s competitive spirit has also shone through at various ballet competitions, earning him multiple awards, including the esteemed Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) bursary and a gold medal at the South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC). This recognition places him among the elite young dancers in the country, further solidifying his reputation in the ballet community. His accomplishments have garnered him formal recognition from the City of Johannesburg, showcasing the city’s pride in nurturing local talent.

Miguel’s passion for ballet extends beyond South Africa’s borders. He has attended elite training programs and summer schools worldwide, honing his skills under the guidance of renowned instructors. Notably, he received three invitations to South Korea, where he studied with Professor Sun Hi Kim at K-Arts University, and trained alongside Argentine ballet superstar Julio Bocca. His international experience also includes training at the prestigious Annarella International Conservatory of Ballet and Dance in Leiria, Portugal, and participating in the finals of the Youth America Grand Prix in the USA.

As Miguel sets his sights on the future, he is focused on becoming a principal dancer and ultimately hopes to choreograph original works that will inspire many. With his unwavering determination and commitment to excellence, he stands as a proud ambassador for South African ballet, continuously pushing artistic boundaries while staying true to his roots.

In a world where many young talents chase opportunities abroad, Miguel Franco-Green is a shining example of dedication to one’s homeland, embodying the spirit of South African culture and creativity. Watch this space, as we are sure to see great things from this bright star in the years to come.
