Bardiya Film Festival Celebrates Cinema and Culture in Cairo

Cairo’s cultural scene burst to life as the Bardiya Film Festival kicked off its much-anticipated second edition at the prestigious Hanager Theater within the iconic Cairo Opera House. This year’s festival, which commenced on September 9, 2025, is not just showcasing cinematic excellence; it’s also paying tribute to the legendary Egyptian screenwriter Wahid Hamed, whose storytelling profoundly shaped contemporary Egyptian cinema.

Under the auspices of Egypt’s Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Social Solidarity, the festival has attracted numerous filmmakers from across the Arab world and beyond. With over 800 film submissions vying for awards in the short film categories—specifically works crafted in five and fifteen-minute formats that were produced post-January 2024—this year promises to push the boundaries of storytelling and creativity.

Opening night was a heartfelt affair filled with nostalgia and celebration. Attendees were treated to special tributes honoring Wahid Hamed, whose cinematic works resonate with Egyptian audiences and highlight the rich tapestry of life in the region. A commemorative book titled “Wahid Hamed.. Awan El Ward”—meaning “The Time of Roses”—was also unveiled, offering insights into the screenwriter’s life and pivotal contributions to the arts.

Among the distinguished guests were actress Elham Shaheen and director Marwan Hamed, the son of the honoree. Their presence, alongside other celebrated figures such as actress Hala Sedky, renowned designer Reem El-Adl, and media personality Bossy Shalaby, underscored the festival’s significance in the cultural landscape.

The jury, led by the accomplished cinematographer Said Shimi, will be tasked with the exciting role of selecting winners amid such fierce talent. Their decisions will be revealed at the festival’s grand closing ceremony, promising an evening filled with anticipation and celebration of artistic achievement.

The Bardiya Film Festival stands as a vibrant platform where emerging talent meets the experienced, all while engaging in meaningful dialogue about the future of cinema in Egypt and the Arab world. It’s an event that not only enriches local culture but also positions Cairo as a key player in the global film community.

With the festival in full swing, both film enthusiasts and casual viewers are encouraged to witness the unique storytelling that unfolds on screen—showcasing the best of what contemporary Arab cinema has to offer.
