Lagos Air Quality Index Raises Concerns for Sensitive Groups
In a recent update, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has revealed that many areas in Lagos are currently experiencing air quality levels classified as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” (UfSG). This news was shared by LASEPA’s general manager, Babtunde Ajayi, through his verified social media account on Monday, bringing attention to an issue that impacts the health of the city’s residents, particularly those who are more vulnerable.
The air quality index (AQI) measurements spotlighted some areas with concerning levels of pollution. Kosofe, specifically LAMATA, topped the list with a reading of 25, while Victoria Island followed closely with a score of 20. Other noteworthy areas included Igando and the University of Lagos (UNILAG CRL), both registering at 18. Although these levels are not deemed immediately hazardous to the general population, they may pose risks for those with respiratory issues, the elderly, and young children.
In addition, several other regions have recorded elevated AQI figures, including Moloney Street, Akodo, Lagos Island, and Mushin, each sitting at 16. It’s essential for people living in these areas to stay informed and take necessary precautions to avoid exposure, especially on days when air quality is subpar.
On a brighter note, two locations, Egbeda and NiMET in Oshodi, have shown “Good” air quality with readings of 11 and 10, respectively. These areas present minimal concerns for the general populace, offering a healthier environment in contrast to their counterparts.
LASEPA and other environmental agencies emphasize the need for continued monitoring and public awareness regarding air quality, especially as urbanization and industrial activities evolve in this bustling metropolis. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on air quality reports and engage in practices that can help mitigate pollution, such as using public transport and reducing vehicular emissions.
