Closing the Gap Between Data Literacy and South African Society: SAS's Call to Action

In an era where data drives decision-making and innovation, SAS, the renowned leader in data and artificial intelligence, has issued a compelling call to address the widening gap between mathematics, data literacy, and society at large. This initiative gains significance as South Africa celebrates National Science Week from August 4 to 9, under the inspiring theme: “Science, Technology and Innovation are for Everyone.”

As we approach 2025, a milestone year for SAS – marking three decades of impactful presence in South Africa – the company is sharpening its focus on fostering accessible, ethical, and human-centered innovations. David Cosgrave, the Country Manager at SAS South Africa, emphasized the importance of science. “Science does not just live in labs and classrooms; it is deeply embedded in how we build, trade, govern, and communicate,” he explained. This sentiment reflects a vital truth: while science forms the backbone of progress, many South Africans still feel a disconnection from the world of data and analytics.

In an effort to bridge this gap, SAS is committed to transforming analytics from a complex tool into an empowering resource accessible to everyone. The company supports a variety of grassroots and academic initiatives that aim to build local capacity in essential skills such as mathematics, coding, and artificial intelligence. This includes innovative programs like Coding4Mandela and Teachers4DataAnalytics, along with the My Maths Buddy initiative in partnership with CM Vellem Primary School in Makhanda.

Through these initiatives, SAS is not merely providing tools but is investing in the future of education. Teachers benefit from accredited training and learner kits that enhance both their confidence and their students’ comprehension in the classroom. This is especially crucial in light of reports indicating that approximately 82 percent of Grade 4 learners struggle to read for meaning in any language.

SAS’s commitment to education and data literacy serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path toward a more informed society that values innovation and inclusivity. By empowering individuals with the skills to analyze and understand data, SAS is not only shaping the future of the tech landscape in South Africa but is also contributing to a well-rounded approach to problem-solving that can have lasting societal benefits.

As we witness these efforts unfold during National Science Week, it’s crucial for individuals and communities to recognize the importance of science and technology in their lives. Together, let’s embrace the opportunities that lie within data and technology.
