Title: EWADE Steps Up: Maize Relief Delivered to Families Impacted by Mpakeni Dam Construction
By Bongiwe Dlamini
In a heartwarming demonstration of community support, the Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE) has recently delivered maize to 35 families who temporarily relocated due to the construction of the R2.6 billion Mpakeni Dam. This initiative aims to alleviate challenges faced by residents from the Mpakeni and Mashekeshe areas, showcasing the government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of all citizens during significant national projects.
As EWADE Corporate Communications Manager, Nokwazi Hlophe, explained, this maize distribution is part of their Life Restoration Program. “We want to ensure that these families, who have given up their land for national development, do not go hungry,” she stated. This thoughtful gesture is not only about meeting immediate food needs but also about reinforcing a sense of community and connection during a transformative time.
The impact of this initiative has resonated deeply within the community. Gogo Lomasontfo Simelane from Mashekesheni expressed her gratitude, saying, “EWADE has proven to be a mother to them. They didn’t just talk; they acted. This maize is life to my grandchildren.” Such heartfelt sentiments speak volumes about the trust and relationship that EWADE has cultivated with the affected families.
Moreover, Zodwa Ginindza from Mpakeni mirrored this sentiment, highlighting a common concern among relocated communities—the fear of being forgotten. “Promises are normally forgotten after relocation, but not with EWADE. They saw our struggle and responded with love,” she said, emphasizing the importance of tangible support in fostering trust between the community and development agencies.
As the Mpakeni Dam project progresses, the collaboration between EWADE and local families serves as a model for how development can be approached responsibly and compassionately. By ensuring that the needs of the community are prioritized, EWADE is not only facilitating progress but also securing a positive future for the families involved.
This initiative underscores the importance of community engagement in national projects, reminding us all that development can indeed go hand-in-hand with social responsibility.
