Exciting Developments in Community Broadcasting: TUT FM and Tshwane FM Go Digital!

On Friday, August 8, 2025, an electrifying chapter in community broadcasting will be written as the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) Board, spearheaded by Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Mr. Kenny Morolong (MP), officially unveils cutting-edge, fully digitized broadcast studios at two of Tshwane’s vibrant community radio stations: TUT FM 96.2 and Tshwane FM.

This initiative underscores the MDDA’s unwavering commitment to amplifying community media through significant investment in infrastructure and technological advancements. It’s not just about upgrading equipment; it’s about enriching the cultural fabric of the community and fostering a platform for diverse voices.

TUT FM 96.2, strategically located at the Soshanguve South Campus of Tshwane University of Technology, boasts an impressive listenership of over 61,000 within a 50km broadcast radius. This station aims to resonate with the youth demographic, specifically targeting individuals between the ages of 15 and 35. Broadcasting in six languages—English, Setswana, Sepedi, isiZulu, Tshivenda, and Xitsonga—TUT FM is a crucial lifeline for diverse communities, enhancing inclusivity and representation on air.

Meanwhile, Tshwane FM, the official student radio station of the same university, broadcasts on the 93.6 FM frequency and serves a wide range of listeners across Greater Tshwane, including areas like Atteridgeville, Laudium, Mamelodi, Centurion, Midrand, and parts of northern Johannesburg. By reaching these areas, Tshwane FM plays an essential role in community cohesion and communication.

The digitization of these studios is more than a technological upgrade; it symbolizes a new era for these radio stations. Enhanced production quality will empower them to deliver relevant, multilingual programming that resonates with their communities. Moreover, this development provides students in media studies with unparalleled access to state-of-the-art broadcasting facilities, preparing them for future careers in a competitive industry.

As we look forward to the launch, it’s clear that the transformation of TUT FM and Tshwane FM into fully digital platforms will not only elevate the quality of content but also inspire a new generation of broadcasters ready to tackle the challenges and opportunities of today’s media landscape.

Stay tuned for what promises to be a monumental day for community broadcasting in Tshwane!
