A 120km Trek for a Noble Cause: Friends Unite to Support MND Association
This August, a group of eight spirited friends, most of whom boast impressive careers in the NHS, will embark on an inspiring 120km trek along the famed Camino Pilgrimage in Spain. Their mission? To rally vital funds for the Cardiff and Vale Motor Neurone Disease Association—a cause close to their hearts.
The trek was inspired by Hazel Robinson, a retired Director of Workforce & OD at Swansea Bay University Health Board. While vacationing last summer, Hazel was struck by the sight of pilgrims arriving at the magnificent cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. “As I watched the weary yet triumphant faces of those completing the pilgrimage, I felt a spark of inspiration. I thought, what an incredible journey this would be! I wondered if my friends would join me, and to my delight, eight were fully on board,” she shared.
The heart of their initiative lies in solidarity with their friend Suzanne Granger, whose sister, Chris Matthews, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2018. Suzanne, a former HR Business Partner for Aneurin Bevan Health Board, is driving this fundraising effort with unwavering determination. “Hazel’s idea to tackle part of the Camino was perfect for both raising funds and awareness for this wonderful charity. We’ve been training intensely, going on long walks, and are grateful for the community’s generous support,” she expressed.

This includes home adaptations, support groups, and various resources made possible through the power of fundraising and unwavering volunteer spirit.
