In a groundbreaking move for digital connectivity, DFA, a leading enterprise connectivity provider in South Africa, has teamed up with global technology innovator Ciena to achieve an unprecedented feat in fiber capacity. Recently, they delivered over four times the performance of previous trials, setting a new standard in the telecom industry.
The world-first trial utilized Ciena’s state-of-the-art WaveRouter and WaveLogic 6 Extreme solutions to transmit a staggering 1.6 terabits per second (Tbps) over a single wavelength. This milestone was achieved along a 40-kilometer stretch that connects Isando and Midrand, coinciding with earlier tests that demonstrated a capability of just 400 gigabits per second (Gbps). This leap in performance marks a significant advancement for IP/optical convergence.
Andreas Uys, the Chief Technology Officer at MAZIV (the parent company of DFA), expressed enthusiasm for the development, stating, “This greatly enhances the capability of DFA’s existing network and gives us the confidence that we can meet the growing digital demands of our customers. We can seamlessly onboard next-generation connectivity services in selected regions before scaling them nationwide.” This progressive approach not only enhances the service delivery but also serves as a testimony to DFA’s commitment to innovation and superior network infrastructure.
The trial follows the first phase of DFA’s ambitious R800 million investment in upgrading its network, which included the deployment of Dry Underground Distribution Cabinets (DUDCs) designed to accelerate service delivery in high-density areas. Uys remarked that the successful deployment of this cutting-edge technology was made possible by the high quality of their newly upgraded fiber infrastructure and the robust design of their core network.
Ciena’s WaveLogic capabilities, powered through a partnership with Willcom, are integral to enhancing DFA’s scalability, flexibility, and sustainability. These advancements enable the integration of services at 400 Gbps and 800 Gbps, setting the stage for future capacity increases.
Virginie Hollebecque, Vice President for EMEA at Ciena, emphasized the impact of this collaboration, stating, “As the leading dark fiber provider in South Africa, DFA is taking bold steps to support the growing connectivity needs of its customers.” The alignment of Ciena’s optical and routing technologies within a multi-layer architecture allows DFA to create a more streamlined and robust network, ensuring that they deliver capacity precisely when and where it’s needed.
This technological leap forward not only positions DFA as a formidable player in South Africa’s connectivity landscape but also demonstrates the nation’s commitment to embracing digital transformation. With its sights set on the future, DFA is ensuring that South Africa is not just keeping pace with the digital world but is, in fact, leading the charge.
