Bally Community Celebrates Government’s Support for Bursaries and Meal Allowances!

UNZA Student Movement Applauds Government’s New Student Support Initiatives

LUSAKA, August 13, 2025 – In a significant move aimed at enhancing access to higher education, the University of Zambia (UNZA) has seen overwhelming support from the “Friends of Bally,” a student-led initiative, following the government’s recent reintroduction of bursaries and meal allowances for university students. This initiative, spearheaded by the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), has been hailed as a “milestone achievement” that will empower a new generation of learners in Zambia.

Albert Manjilunji, the National Executive Coordinator of the Friends of Bally, emphasized the importance of these funds in creating equal educational opportunities for vulnerable segments of society. He stated, “This initiative is not just about providing financial support; it’s about changing lives and fostering a culture of education that can propel our nation forward.” By enabling more students from underserved backgrounds to pursue higher education, the program aligns with Zambia’s broader vision for socioeconomic development.

The grants and allowances are particularly crucial for students who often struggle to finance their education, thereby acting as a catalyst for change. Manjilunji pointed out that education is a formidable tool for transformation, asserting, “These allowances are giving young people the chance to acquire critical skills and knowledge that will ultimately uplift their lives and contribute to their communities.”

In addition to encouraging academic excellence, Manjilunji also urged beneficiaries to harness their education for economic improvement and national growth. He noted the importance of entrepreneurship, declaring, “The future belongs to those who think outside the box. We must prepare our youth to create their own opportunities, as the government alone cannot provide formal employment for everyone in Zambia’s growing population.”

This proactive initiative is not only setting a positive precedent within Zambia but is also a hopeful sign for other African nations exploring ways to expand educational access and economic opportunities. With a vibrant youth population, empowering young minds through education and innovation is essential for the continent’s progress.

In conclusion, the Friends of Bally’s endorsement of the government’s bursary and meal allowance initiative reflects a promising step towards building a sustainable future for Zambian students. With education as a focal point of national development, the journey towards a more knowledgeable and economically empowered society is on the right track.
