Surgical Marathon in Gauteng: A Life-Changing Initiative for Healthcare

In an inspiring showcase of healthcare collaboration, Gauteng’s state and private hospitals joined forces to perform an incredible 806 surgical procedures in just 12 hours during the third annual Mandela Day “Surgical Marathons.” This remarkable event took place on July 19, 2025, and reflects the commitment of the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) to enhance surgical care accessibility across the province.

This year saw an impressive increase of 64 procedures compared to the previous year’s marathon, affirming the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to improve the health landscape in Gauteng. The GDoH focused on several vital surgical specialties, including cleft palate repair, cataract surgery, colostomy reversals, and prostate operations, reaffirming its dedication to addressing the pressing health needs of the community.

Reflecting on the program’s growth, Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko stated, “Since we began the surgical marathons three years ago, our targets have been consistently surpassed as we strive to make a meaningful difference.” Her comments highlighted the collaborative spirit of health professionals, university students, and organizations like the Smile Foundation and Dr. SK Matseke Hospital who joined in this noble cause.

To complement these surgical marathons, the GDoH has introduced Treatment Time Guarantees (TTGs), a groundbreaking framework designed to enhance transparency and accountability in public health. The TTGs will establish maximum waiting times for surgical procedures based on urgency and patient needs, ensuring that everyone receives timely care. MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko emphasized, “Gauteng is making a historic advance in transforming surgical care.”

In addition to the marathons, the GDoH proudly inaugurated a newly renovated Urology Unit at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, which will allow safer and more precise prostate biopsies without requiring surgery. Similarly, the Helen Joseph Hospital’s Breast Centre of Excellence has reopened with advanced imaging capabilities that will significantly improve breast cancer detection and diagnosis.

“The new facilities will offer a dignified and welcoming environment for care, providing hope to patients and their families at critical moments,” the GDoH affirmed in an official statement, emphasizing its commitment to uplifting healthcare delivery across the province.

This initiative encapsulates the essence of community-driven healthcare and showcases the positive strides being made in Gauteng. By effectively addressing surgical care demands, the province not only enhances patient outcomes but also sets an inspiring precedent for other regions.

As Gauteng continues to innovate and adapt to the evolving needs of its residents, it stands as a beacon of hope and progress in African healthcare.
