Theology Students from Türkiye Boost Their Arabic Proficiency During Immersive Experience in Tunisia

In a vibrant initiative that underscores the intersection of education and cultural exchange, students from Türkiye’s theology faculty are honing their Arabic language skills in the picturesque setting of Tunisia. This enriching experience is part of an Arabic language training program conducted at the renowned Burgiba Language Institute, where students engage in practical lessons covering both classical and modern Arabic. Beyond the classroom, they immerse themselves in the language through everyday interactions, making their educational journey truly dynamic.

Emin Soysaç, Türkiye’s education counselor in Tunisia, shared the program’s holistic nature, highlighting the supportive atmosphere that allows students to thrive. “Our students are not just learning Arabic; they are also collaborating with peers from a variety of backgrounds, creating a communal learning environment,” he noted. The program extends its support to female students who have also registered at the institute, ensuring they receive the necessary assistance, including accommodation. Additionally, the involvement of Türkiye’s Ambassador adds a level of visibility and care for these students, reinforcing the importance of their educational pursuits.

The strategic location of Tunisia is a critical asset for students. Muhammed Revaha Zor, a doctoral student who is coordinating activities on-site, explained that Tunisia serves as a valuable bridge for Arabic education between the West and the Eastern Arab world. “Here, our students learn not just Arabic, but also the local dialect, which enriches their experience. Classes are structured to provide a balance of formal education and real-world practice,” he said, pointing out that lessons run from eight in the morning until noon, followed by excursions that foster practical speaking opportunities.

Students like Sinem Nur Suca from Istanbul University are embracing this safe and welcoming environment. “I’ve truly felt at home since I arrived. The courses in both classical and modern Arabic are complemented by direct interactions with locals, which enhances our speaking skills immensely.” Another student, Sıla Ataş, emphasized the significance of Arabic in theology, stating, “We recognized that Arabic is often underappreciated in academic settings. However, our belief in its value led us to Tunisia, where the expertise in Classical Arabic among the local population eases our communication.”

Part of their cultural immersion includes visiting notable cultural and historical sites such as Kairouan, allowing students to practice Arabic while gaining insights into the rich heritage of Tunisia. Esra Mutlu, reflecting on her experiences, highlighted the kindness and civility of the Tunisian people. “Even when simply asking for directions, locals go above and beyond to assist. I faced a minor health issue, but navigating the healthcare system was seamless and I felt well taken care of,” she shared.

This initiative not only enhances language acquisition but also fosters cultural appreciation among students. As they continue their studies in Tunisia, these future theologians are not just acquiring a language; they are building a bridge of understanding and appreciation across cultures.
