South African Dancers Shine at World Dance Movement Festival in Italy
Three dynamic young dancers from the Outline Dance Centre in Somerset West have made a lasting impression on the international stage, returning home as celebrated award winners. Sisters Storme (15) and Heike (13) Africa-Sylvester, along with their talented friend Kristina van Wyk (13), proudly represented South Africa at the prestigious World Dance Movement (WDM) Festival held in Italy during the recent school holidays.
The dancers earned their coveted spots at this elite global event after showcasing their exceptional skills at the TIME dance competition earlier this year in 2024. Their outstanding performances caught the eye of renowned dance professional Vivian Pullin, who handpicked them for this incredible opportunity.
Once in Italy, the trio immersed themselves in a week-long experience filled with intensive workshops led by some of the world’s most acclaimed teachers and choreographers. This was not just about dance; it was an enriching journey where they honed their techniques, stepped outside their comfort zones, and built confidence among peers from different corners of the globe. Such exposure is invaluable and contributes significantly to their growth as artists.
Their hard work and commitment paid off handsomely. Heike secured five complimentary dance classes at the illustrious Broadway Dance Center in New York City and a month of unlimited online classes with Space TV. Storme also earned a scholarship towards the upcoming WDM 2026 event, in addition to access to online classes. Meanwhile, Kristina received a 50% scholarship to join the exclusive viaggio DANZA tour this October—an incredible feat that emphasizes her talent and potential.
The week culminated in an unforgettable gala performance, showcasing their stunning choreography developed under the guidance of their teacher, Verné Krige. Amidst fierce competition, Kristina and Heike made their mark in the duet category, clinching second place, while Heike’s solo performances received impressive scores of 94% and 93%.
These talented young dancers not only brought back awards and scholarships but also cherished memories that will inspire their futures in dance. Their achievements highlight the rich dance culture in South Africa and underscore the importance of nurturing young talent in the arts.
