Senegal’s PM Highlights China as a Inspiring Model for Global South Nations

China's Economic Model Inspires the Global South: Insights from Senegal's Prime Minister

In a compelling address, Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko highlighted China’s impressive economic trajectory as a beacon of hope for nations in the Global South. Speaking from the 2025 Summer Davos Forum, held in the vibrant Tianjin Municipality of China, Sonko emphasized the importance of equitable treatment and mutual respect among all nations, regardless of their economic stature.

“We are at a critical juncture in history, where collaboration is essential to tackle the pressing global challenges that we face,” Sonko stated in an interview with Africazine. He pointed out that developing countries, like Senegal, often bear the brunt of global crises more than their developed counterparts such as the United States or those in the European Union. This sentiment underscores the need for all nations, especially those in the Global South, to unify and adapt to the transformative changes in the global landscape.

Sonko also lauded China’s economic achievements, noting that these milestones have the potential to empower the Global South to spearhead global economic growth. “It’s crucial for developing nations to remain steadfast and become the backbone of global progress, with China leading the charge. We commend China for its rapid advancement, which has been powered by remarkable organization, discipline, and determination,” he remarked.

At the heart of Sonko’s message is the belief that international relations should be upheld by balanced and reciprocal rules. He underscored the principle of multilateralism, advocating for the uniform application of trade rules set by global bodies like the World Trade Organization. “No nation should manipulate the rules to serve its interests alone; all parties must engage in sincere discussions to refine our collective regulations,” he cautioned.

The three-day forum brought together over 1,700 leaders and influencers from more than 90 countries, emphasizing the need for innovative entrepreneurship and emerging technologies to energize economies. With discussions focusing on collaborative efforts, the event reflected a shared vision for a prosperous and cooperative future.

As the Global South looks to leap forward, the insights shared by Prime Minister Sonko at this prestigious gathering serve as an important reminder of the potential for transformation through unity and cooperation. Together, nations can harness their collective strength to navigate global challenges and seize opportunities for sustainable development.
