Liebherr Unveils Innovative Trolley Solution for Enhanced Efficiency at Collahuasi Mine!

Liebherr Mining Unleashes Innovative Trolley Solutions at Collahuasi Copper Mine in Chile

In an exciting development for the mining industry, Liebherr Mining has debuted a cutting-edge trolley solution at the Collahuasi copper mine, nestled in the breathtaking Tarapacá region of Chile. This remarkable collaboration with Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi, which is jointly owned by industry giants Anglo American, Glencore, and Japan Collahuasi Resources B.V., showcases the potential of advanced mining technology in challenging environments.

Located at a staggering 4,500 meters above sea level, the Collahuasi site presents unique challenges, including extreme weather conditions and seismic activity. However, Liebherr’s engineering prowess has resulted in a successful installation of a 1-kilometer trolley line that now powers four Liebherr T 284 mining trucks, each with a capacity of 360 metric tons (mt). This innovation not only enhances operational efficiency but also demonstrates the ongoing evolution of mining technology.

Oliver Weiss, Liebherr’s executive vice president for R&D, engineering, and production, highlighted the significance of this project, stating, “This is the first full trolley solution we’ve delivered, and it’s a pivotal achievement for us.” Weiss noted that Liebherr has previously supplied trolley trucks to various locations, including Panama and Zambia, using this experience to inform the successful deployment at Collahuasi.

This comprehensive trolley solution included not just the manufacturing of the infrastructure and power systems, but also extensive on-site training and support for the mine’s workforce. Collahuasi’s trolley line is capable of supporting two ultra-class T 284 trucks operating simultaneously, driven by a robust power system featuring two 5.5-MW transformers. The global sourcing of components ensured that the highest quality materials were utilized, with Liebherr Chile overseeing the local operations.

Gonzalo Garcia, managing director of Liebherr Chile’s mining division, remarked on the strategic partnerships that made this project possible. “We combined our global network’s best resources, from engineering in Chile to critical components sourced from South Africa and beyond,” he explained.

As Collahuasi takes control of the trolley operations, Liebherr remains committed to supporting the mine with ongoing training and technical expertise. There’s a shared optimism about the future, with Liebherr eager to expand its trolley solutions across the globe.

This project not only marks a significant milestone for both Liebherr and Collahuasi but also reinforces the transformative potential of technology in the mining sector. As mining companies hone in on sustainable and efficient practices, innovations like the trolley solution at Collahuasi signal a promising future for the industry.

Stay tuned for more updates on this technological journey and its impact on the future of mining!
