Namibian Government's Graduate Internship Program Gathers Momentum

In an exciting development for Namibian youth, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah recently announced impressive progress in the country’s graduate employment initiative. By June 2025, the government has successfully facilitated 734 internship and trainee placements across various public institutions, showcasing a commitment to strengthening the workforce and combating youth unemployment.

During the launch of the 6th National Development Plan (NDP6) and her report on the accomplishments during her first three months in office, President Nandi-Ndaitwah revealed ambitious objectives. The administration aims to place at least 5,000 graduates in internships each year, with a targeted retention rate of 80 percent for those transitioning into formal employment after their placements.

Leading the charge is the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), which has secured an impressive 511 internships. Notable placements within this ministry include:

– 22 at Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC)
– 65 at MICT itself
– 92 at Telecom Namibia
– 9 at New Era Publications
– 23 at the Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA)
– A substantial 300 at Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC)

Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform facilitated 61 placements at three Rural Development Centres, helping nurture talent in rural areas:

– 38 interns in Ongwediva
– 17 in Okashana
– 6 in Ben Hur

The Ministry of International Relations and Trade also played its part, facilitating 162 placements in total—155 graduates were absorbed by various Namibian businesses, while seven ventured as interns on MSC cruise ships, showcasing the global opportunities available to Namibian youth.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized that graduate employment remains a cornerstone of NDP6, reflecting a broader strategy to enhance human capital in the nation. This program doesn’t just promise job placements; it aims to build a resilient workforce capable of driving economic growth in Namibia.

As the country focuses on its youth, initiatives like these can create lasting positive change, steering the nation toward a more prosperous future.
