South Africa and Tunisia Forge New Path in Science, Technology, and Innovation
In a significant move to bolster cooperation in science, technology, and innovation, South Africa and Tunisia have officially signed a partnership agreement during Minister Blade Nzimande’s recent visit to Tunisia. This initiative, known as the Scaling Up Tunisia – South Africa Strategy, aims to deepen the existing ties and foster holistic collaboration between the two nations.
The agreement was finalized during a vibrant signing ceremony, preceded by an engaging opening address featuring keynote speeches from Université de la Manouba’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, His Excellency Mr. Mondher Belaid, and Minister Nzimande. In his remarks, Nzimande highlighted the historical bond shared by the two countries, noting, “Our partnership was forged in the heat of anti-colonial struggles,” underscoring the importance of solidarity in adversity.
The Action Plan outlined in this partnership focuses on several key areas, including an Exchange Programme, networking, joint research initiatives, Intellectual Property Rights, and the transfer of knowledge and skills in innovation. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of participating in international programs to enhance governance in science and technology.
Minister Nzimande expressed gratitude towards the Tunisian Embassy in South Africa for its relentless efforts in nurturing this partnership. The minister also acknowledged Ms. Hasna Tizaoui, the Economic and Cultural Counsellor of the Embassy of Tunisia, with the prestigious Science Diplomacy Award. This recognition reflects the significance of cross-border collaboration in advancing scientific research and innovation.
As global geopolitical dynamics shift, the partnership comes at a crucial time. The ministers recognize the challenges posed by rising unipolarity and advocate for stronger regional cooperation among African nations. “To address the complexities we face, African countries must engage in deeper sub-regional collaboration, particularly in the spheres of science and technology,” Nzimande stated.
This partnership aims to tackle pressing continental issues such as youth unemployment, healthcare, food security, energy needs, climate change, and digital transformation. By pooling their resources and expertise, South Africa and Tunisia are poised to develop sustainable solutions that could set a precedent for other African nations.
Accompanying Minister Nzimande on this transformative journey are senior officials and experts from various scientific and technological agencies, including the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), and National Research Foundation (NRF). This diverse delegation showcases the commitment of South Africa to leading in science and technology on the continent.
The partnership between South Africa and Tunisia not only promises to enhance bilateral relations but also stands as a testament to Africa’s collective ambition for innovation and sustainable development. As these two nations embark on this collaborative journey, the efforts are a beacon of hope for a brighter, more innovative future across the African continent.
