In an exciting showcase of talent and passion for wildlife, two exceptional safari field guides from the enchanting town of Hoedspruit were recognized at the prestigious Safari Guide of the Year awards ceremony. This year’s competition drew in the crème de la crème of South Africa’s field guides, as five talented finalists competed fiercely for the much-coveted title. Among those in the spotlight were Cameron Schmidt from Pumba Private Game Reserve, Jason Gipson from Lion Sands Game Reserve, Kalie Otimile representing Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, Matthew Derry from Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, and the multi-talented Megan Heramb-Smith, a versatile freelance guide and the driving force behind The Great Outdoors.
Over several days, these finalists faced an assortment of demanding challenges tailored to test their deep bush knowledge, guiding skills, and ability to connect with guests. The evaluations included guided game drives, bush walks, photographic safaris, bird calls, and track identification, alongside advanced rifle handling and engaging storytelling. In a triumphant finish, Hoedspruit’s very own Jason Gipson claimed the prestigious title of Safari Guide of the Year.
