Celebrating Excellence: Hoedspruit's Stars Shine at Safari Guide of the Year Awards

In an exciting showcase of talent and passion for wildlife, two exceptional safari field guides from the enchanting town of Hoedspruit were recognized at the prestigious Safari Guide of the Year awards ceremony. This exhilarating event took place over the weekend at the breathtaking Kariega Game Reserve, nestled in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. It’s a celebration that not only highlights the prowess of these guides but also underscores the deep connection between people and nature.

This year’s competition drew in the crème de la crème of South Africa’s field guides, as five talented finalists competed fiercely for the much-coveted title. Among those in the spotlight were Cameron Schmidt from Pumba Private Game Reserve, Jason Gipson from Lion Sands Game Reserve, Kalie Otimile representing Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, Matthew Derry from Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, and the multi-talented Megan Heramb-Smith, a versatile freelance guide and the driving force behind The Great Outdoors.

Over several days, these finalists faced an assortment of demanding challenges tailored to test their deep bush knowledge, guiding skills, and ability to connect with guests. The evaluations included guided game drives, bush walks, photographic safaris, bird calls, and track identification, alongside advanced rifle handling and engaging storytelling. Each challenge was meticulously designed to determine who would emerge at the top of this highly respected competition.

In a triumphant finish, Hoedspruit’s very own Jason Gipson claimed the prestigious title of Safari Guide of the Year. His commitment, presence, and skill throughout the rigorous tests set him apart, as he demonstrated not only his guiding expertise but also his dedication as a lifelong learner in the fascinating world of the bush. With over seven years of guiding experience, including his current tenure at Lion Sands, Gipson expresses a heartfelt connection to nature. “The most rewarding part of guiding is being the link between guests and the natural world,” he shared. “That moment when someone sees a lion or elephant for the first time is unforgettable.”

Not far behind, Megan Heramb-Smith also made her mark by winning the bird slide and sound category, as well as excelling in the guided bush walk, showcasing her impressive expertise in the field. Heramb-Smith’s enthusiasm for wildlife and commitment to guest experience played a crucial role in her success.

With such remarkable performances, this year’s awards not only celebrate individual accomplishments but remind us all of the profound beauty of South Africa’s wild spaces. As these guides continue to share their passion and knowledge, they forge lasting connections between people and nature, inspiring a new generation to appreciate and protect the rich wildlife of Africa.
