Exciting Times Ahead: Learner Leadership Summit Set to Empower Future Generations in Johannesburg
In a significant step towards nurturing future leaders, the Minister of Basic Education, Ms. Siviwe Gwarube, will take center stage tomorrow at the highly anticipated 2025 Learner Leadership Summit. The event, themed “Strengthening Foundations for Learning Towards a Resilient Future – Fit Education System,” is scheduled to unfold at the Johannesburg City Council, and it’s bound to make a lasting impact on the youth.
This year’s summit promises to be a vibrant gathering of Learner Leaders, marking a continuation of the initiatives set forth in previous years. What was once known as the RCL (Representative Council of Learners) conference has been revitalized in collaboration with prominent partners, including the Agape Youth Movement, Haleon, and the Mr. Price Foundation. Together, these organizations aim to bolster the functionality and influence of RCLs across all provinces, which is essential for empowering student voices in various educational matters.
Participants can look forward to an engaging agenda that spans two full days packed with partner-led workshops, play-based learning sessions, and thought-provoking exhibitions. These activities highlight ongoing initiatives designed to amplify youth agency and support learner leadership. Since the inaugural summit earlier in June 2023, the Department and its partners have been committed to providing stronger platforms for RCL engagement, fostering a sense of purpose and responsibility among students.
