Major Infrastructure Milestone for Lesotho Highlands Water Project
DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – Exciting developments are brewing for the Lesotho Highlands Water Project Phase II as the second Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has officially arrived at Maydon Wharf in Durban. This significant infrastructure achievement brings us one step closer to enhancing water security and distribution across Southern Africa. The TBM, named the Polihali, is not just a piece of machinery; it symbolizes progress and collaboration between nations, aiming to transform the lives of many in Lesotho and South Africa.
The Polihali TBM is set to embark on its journey across the border into Lesotho next week. This monumental task includes transporting the cutter head and other essential components, which will swiftly follow. Once operational, this TBM will spearhead the excavation of the 38-kilometre Polihali Transfer Tunnel, a critical component of the cross-border water project.
What’s particularly noteworthy is that this arrival follows the successful deployment of the first TBM, known locally as Khoiti ea Ngoaha Kholo (KENK2), which is already hard at work delivering its promise. The efforts being made to establish this infrastructure underline a commitment to inter-nation partnerships aimed at solving regional challenges such as water scarcity.
As the new machine is assembled and prepared for launch, its role in this ambitious venture is expected to contribute significantly to Southern Africa’s water infrastructure landscape. Water is life, and this advanced technology is poised to ensure that communities and economies thrive thanks to a stable and reliable water supply.
The Lesotho Highlands Water Project is more than just an engineering endeavor; it is a project that bridges communities and creates opportunities for development and sustainability. The benefits will stretch beyond Lesotho and South Africa, offering insights and models for other regions striving to enhance their infrastructure.
Stay tuned for further updates as the Polihali TBM makes its journey and phases of this groundbreaking project unfold. This is just the beginning of a larger narrative focused on regional cooperation and development in #Africa.
