Egypt's Pharmaceutical Sector: A Beacon of Self-Sufficiency and Growth
CAIRO – June 2, 2025 – Exciting developments are underway in Egypt as the country continues to bolster its pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities, establishing itself as a noteworthy player in the global healthcare landscape. The Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC), part of the Egyptian Cabinet, has recently highlighted that Egypt has achieved an impressive 91 percent self-sufficiency in medicine production. This remarkable feat reflects years of dedicated effort to enhance local manufacturing processes and increase the availability of essential medical products for its citizens.
With a thriving network of over 179 pharmaceutical factories scattered across the nation, Egypt boasts eleven internationally accredited facilities, which adhere to stringent global standards. The country also supports 150 factories focused on medical supplies, five dedicated entirely to raw material production, and four specialized facilities for biological products. Together, these facilities operate an astounding 986 production lines, showcasing Egypt’s commitment to advancing its local healthcare manufacturing.
In a commendable effort to further strengthen its healthcare sector, the Egyptian government has taken significant steps by increasing the national health budget by 24.9 percent for the 2024/2025 fiscal year. The new budget allocates approximately LE 496 billion, up from LE 397 billion allocated in the previous year. This decision underscores Egypt’s commitment to meeting its constitutional obligations regarding healthcare funding and prioritizing public health.
In addition to the broader health budget, the government has pledged to maintain the continuity of its state-funded medical treatment program without interruptions. The allocated budget for this program has also seen a notable increase, rising by 16.1 percent to LE 10.1 billion for the upcoming fiscal year, compared to LE 8.7 billion in 2023/2024. These strategic allocations are indicative of Egypt’s focus on achieving health sovereignty while enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
