Celebrating a 20-Year Partnership: Cork's Lord Mayor Visits Shanghai

In a significant milestone for international friendship and cooperation, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Dan Boyle, is visiting Shanghai to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Cork-Shanghai partnership. This important event highlights the ongoing collaboration between the two cities that has flourished since their twinning agreement was signed two decades ago.

Cllr Boyle is accompanied by a small delegation, which includes representatives from University College Cork (UCC) and the Cork Chamber of Commerce, along with a council official. The trip is made even more special by an invitation from the Mayor of Shanghai to participate in the 2025 Shanghai International Friendship Cities Cooperation Forum. This forum is set to host an impressive lineup of mayors from various cities worldwide, including Liverpool, Mexico City, Casablanca, Athens, Kuala Lumpur, Palo Alto, and Los Angeles, embodying the spirit of global camaraderie.

Reflecting on the partnership, Cllr Boyle stated, “Twenty years ago, Cork City Council and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government signed a twinning agreement, establishing a bond between the second city of Ireland and the second city of China. Our cooperation with Shanghai is thriving today, evident in our ongoing collaborations in education, healthcare, business, and culture.” His enthusiastic remarks underline the mutual benefits that have emerged from this alliance.

To honor this special anniversary, Cllr Boyle has been invited to address the opening plenary session of the forum, where themes of sustainable urban development and innovation will be discussed. These topics are particularly relevant as cities around the globe seek to implement effective strategies for growth in the face of modern challenges.

The visit will include engaging events such as a meeting with the President of Shanghai University, the ceremonial planting of a tree on the university’s grounds, attendance at a business networking event, and interactions with the Irish Consul General in Shanghai—further solidifying the connections forged through this partnership.

Shanghai is generously covering all accommodation and travel costs—excluding flights—demonstrating the city’s commitment to fostering strong international relations.

Cork’s thriving partnership with Shanghai serves as a blueprint for successful global cooperation, and it is heartening to see initiatives that promote cultural exchange and mutual growth. By continuing to build on such foundations, both Cork and Shanghai can look forward to even more fruitful collaborations in the years to come.
