Liberia Intensifies Efforts Against Mpox: A Call for Vigilance and Community Engagement
In a proactive response to a recent uptick in Mpox cases, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) is ramping up its nationwide border surveillance campaign. On May 23, 2025, NPHIL issued a press release detailing the ongoing initiative led by the dedicated Director General, Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan. This mission is especially crucial as it seeks to thwart the spread of the virus through vigilant monitoring and preventative strategies at key entry points along Liberia’s borders with Sierra Leone and Guinea.
The NPHIL team is currently touring Lofa County, focusing their efforts on critical border towns. Notably, the Medicorma and Sorlumba entry points are being prioritized due to their significance as transit routes. This meticulous surveillance aims to bolster Liberia’s public health readiness, ensuring that essential screening protocols are firmly in place and that local health teams are equipped with the necessary tools to manage any potential outbreaks effectively.
During a recent press briefing, Dr. Nyan shared encouraging news about the country’s response to Mpox. So far, Liberia has recorded 35 confirmed cases of the virus, with 77 individuals successfully recovering. Remarkably, the nation has not reported any fatalities, which underscores the effectiveness of the ongoing public health initiatives.
Dr. Nyan underscored the pivotal role that community engagement plays in the fight against Mpox. He highlighted the need for vigilance and regional cooperation, particularly in border areas where the risk of transmission is elevated. This cooperative approach will foster a more robust defense against potential outbreaks and contribute to overall public health safety in Liberia.
Long-term solutions are crucial, and NPHIL’s commitment to public health remains steadfast. The Institute is prepared to allocate the necessary resources and expertise, ensuring that border communities, which are often at higher risk, remain informed and protected.
As Liberia fortifies its health systems, this situation serves as a reminder of the critical importance of public readiness and community mobilization in combating infectious diseases. Amid these efforts, the collaboration between local health authorities and communities can pave the way for a resilient and health-conscious nation.
