Katia Shek: Transforming Language Learning with Lex for Effortless Conversations

Northwestern Student Innovates Language Learning with AI-Powered App, Lex

In the evolving world of education, young entrepreneurs are leading the charge toward innovative solutions, and Northwestern University student Katia Shek is at the forefront with her exciting start-up, Lex. This app takes a unique approach to language learning by integrating artificial intelligence to create an interactive experience for users. It allows students to engage in meaningful conversations in languages like Chinese, Spanish, and French, all through the convenience of phone calls.

Shek, a junior in the School of Education and Social Policy, has a background rich in innovative ideas, having pursued previous ventures driven by her passion for education. “You just don’t have enough of that opportunity, even in class,” she explains, emphasizing the need for more practical language use. Lex addresses this gap, enabling users to dial a saved contact and practice their language skills via conversational AI. Unlike traditional language-learning apps, Lex offers an “active learning experience” that allows for continuity in learning, as it picks up previous conversations and vocabulary, creating a more personal and intuitive approach to mastering a new language.

Launched in early April, Lex is currently in its private beta-testing phase. Roommate and user Grace Shao credits the app for its impressive voice recognition capabilities, noting, “I actually hadn’t used the voice feature on any of the chat models before, and I was surprised by how good it was.” This feedback suggests that Lex not only meets educational needs but does so with a flair of innovation.

Throughout her entrepreneurial journey, Shek has experienced her share of challenges. Her first project, WizLab, sought to revolutionize how teachers create worksheets using AI. However, after grappling with the scope of that project, she pivoted to focus on language learning, a domain where she feels more confident making a significant impact. Her team swiftly developed a prototype for Lex thanks to the myriad of AI resources available today, making the development phase streamlined and efficient.

Shek’s collaboration with Elizabeth Wang, a design and user experience expert from Carnegie Mellon University, highlights the robust teamwork behind Lex. Together, they are delving into user experience to decode the complexities of language acquisition, aiming to address the unique challenges learners face.

Designed with the needs of Generation Z in mind, Lex promotes hands-free learning, making it perfect for busy students to practice while commuting or during downtime. “I want people to just dial it organically,” Shek says, expressing her desire for users to embrace the app as a natural part of their routine. Through access to cutting-edge technology and a heartfelt mission to simplify language learning, Shek is on her way to turn Lex from a concept into a language-learning revolution.

This refreshing take on language acquisition not only represents a significant leap in educational technology but also serves as an encouragement to aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere—when passion meets innovation, the possibilities are endless.
