Exciting Water Initiative May Lead to Lower Tariffs in Otavi!

In a significant step towards enhancing water access and infrastructure, Urban and Rural Development Minister James Sankwasa has inaugurated a newly planned bulk water infrastructure project in Otavi, Namibia. This initiative is designed not only to address the town’s pressing water debt, which is currently over N million, but also to create a sustainable solution for the residents of this thriving community.

The comprehensive N.5 million project marks a collaboration among the Otavi Town Council, B2Gold Namibia, and the Urban and Rural Development Ministry. The pivotal features of this initiative include the establishment of a new bulk water pipeline, the rehabilitation of existing boreholes, and the construction of an elevated water tower. These developments will serve as essential elements of Otavi’s water master plan, ensuring long-term viability in water supply.

Minister Sankwasa expressed enthusiasm for the project’s progress, stating, “In addition to unveiling phase one of this crucial water infrastructure project, we are also proud to announce another important initiative—a water treatment plant and a groundwater reservoir that will be generously funded by B2Gold.” This dual approach not only highlights the partnership’s strength but also emphasizes the shared commitment to improving community well-being.

Currently, the town charges N per cubic meter of water, plus value-added tax. However, with the new infrastructure in place, officials anticipate a reduction in water tariffs, a move that is set to positively impact residents, especially those in informal settlements. As Sankwasa noted, this is a significant win for the community.

Otavi Mayor Isaac !Hoaeb championed the initiative as a testament to the fundamental right to access clean water, declaring, “Today, we celebrate the tangible fruits of collaboration and development vision. These projects profoundly affect human dignity by ensuring access to clean water, decent housing, and inclusive urban development.”

Moreover, B2Gold Namibia’s Country Manager, John Ross, emphasized the company’s dedication to making a lasting difference in the region as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts. “We aim to leave a legacy that enriches the community,” he said, highlighting a commitment to sustainable projects that go beyond immediate relief measures.

This water project not only stands as a beacon of hope for Otavi’s water challenges but also sets an inspiring precedent for collaboration and community-focused development in Namibia and beyond. With such initiatives rolling out, the future looks promising for improved infrastructure and quality of life in the region.
