Exciting Progress on Harare-Beitbridge Highway Upgrade
In an impressive turn of events, construction has officially resumed on the long-awaited Harare-Beitbridge Highway, one of Zimbabwe’s most significant infrastructure projects. The highway, which stretches a remarkable 580 kilometres, is essential for connecting Zimbabwe to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and enhancing trade within the area. The remaining 88 kilometres of this vital route are now in the capable hands of contractors like Masimba Holdings, Exodus and Company, Fossil Contracting, and Bitumen World, who have mobilised their teams to ensure swift completion.
The inspection of the site by Honourable Ezra Chadzamira, the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in Masvingo, demonstrates the government’s strong commitment to this crucial project. During his visit, he expressed admiration for the contractors’ dedication. “We are thrilled to see work has resumed along the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge road. Our province was notably impacted by previous delays, and we are grateful to the government for its unwavering commitment to bringing this project to fruition,” said Chadzamira.
According to Engineer Takudzwa Mposiwa from Masimba Holdings, significant progress has already been made on a 27-kilometre stretch, with 45 percent of the work completed. This section is expected to be finalised within the next three months.
Local residents, especially road users and businesses, are celebrating the renewed activity on the highway. Many have expressed relief at the expected improvements in travel efficiency, as one motorist noted, “The construction of Mucheke Bridge was long overdue due to heavy traffic congestion during peak hours. But with work underway, we are hopeful that completion is near.”
This highway goes beyond being just a road; it represents a pivotal move towards improving economic connectivity with neighbouring countries, reducing travel time between Harare and the Beitbridge border post. The project is emblematic of the Second Republic’s vision under President Emmerson Mnangagwa, positioning Zimbabwe as a more competitive player in regional trade.
As part of the broader national development strategy aiming for Vision 2030, the Zimbabwean government has reaffirmed its dedication to modernising the nation’s road infrastructure. With the final phase of the Harare-Beitbridge Highway underway, the future looks bright for the economy, local businesses, and commuters alike.
