But her advocacy didn’t stop there; in group assignments, she took it upon herself to teach her hearing peers SASL, fostering an inclusive atmosphere.

“I am a proudly deaf qualified teacher and want to break down discrimination and communication barriers,” Hansrod stated, emphasizing her vision that deafness should not be seen as an impediment to success. Her dedication is evident in her impressive achievements; she secured third place nationally in SASL and was the second top performer among learners from special schools in KwaZulu-Natal.

Khadeejah’s mission extends beyond personal success; she ardently believes that every child, regardless of ability, should see themselves represented in various professions, be it medicine, aviation, or law enforcement. “Every child should feel seen and supported,” she asserts, urging educators to embrace SASL and make peer communication effortless for all students.

Echoing the need for systemic change, Hansrod advocates for a more profound awareness of deaf culture and enhanced academic access for deaf students across South Africa. “SASL is an official language in South Africa; it needs to be treated that way in schools,” she states, reinforcing the message that education should empower every learner.

Looking ahead, she aspires to establish a university specifically catering to deaf students, one that would also welcome hearing individuals interested in SASL. With educators like Khadeejah Hansrod leading the charge, the future of inclusive education in South Africa is undoubtedly bright.
