89 Lekki Men: Proud Workers at the Dangote Refinery!

In recent news that’s caught the attention of many, the Lagos State Police Command has put an end to the swirling rumors regarding a group of 89 men spotted in Ibeju-Lekki. These individuals, it turns out, are not a cause for alarm but rather a legitimate workforce employed for the much-anticipated Dangote Refinery.

The debunking of these rumors came on May 14, 2025, when Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, took to social media platform X to clarify the situation. He explained that the men were hired by a contractor and originated from Katsina State, highlighting the importance of labor mobility within Nigeria’s economic development. “Upon receiving reports about their presence, police officers acted quickly and were dispatched to the scene to ascertain the facts,” Hundeyin noted.

Upon arrival, the police conducted a thorough search of the group, confirming that no incriminating items were discovered. Additionally, each worker was able to provide valid National Identification Numbers that were validated by the authorities. This not only confirms their identity but also underscores the need for formal documentation among workers in the country.

The contractor responsible for recruiting the men also cooperated with law enforcement, providing necessary documentation that attested to the legitimacy of their employment. Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh, reassured the public that there is no cause for concern, emphasizing the police force’s dedication to maintaining public safety and order in the vibrant metropolis of Lagos.

“We are committed to upholding law and order across Lagos and will continue to act decisively on issues that may threaten public safety,” CP Jimoh stated, reinforcing the idea that the police are not just a reactive force, but an integral part of community well-being.

With the Dangote Refinery expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s economy, it’s reassuring to know that the workforce involved is both compliant and monitored. As other regions consider boosting their industrial and economic footprints, the collaboration between laborers and local authorities serves as an example of how to navigate workforce issues safely and effectively.

As Lagos moves forward, securing employment policies, enhancing labor mobility, and mitigating public concerns will be crucial elements in the city’s ongoing development.
