In a heartwarming celebration of cultural exchange and global understanding, five schools from the Northwest California AFS Team, Redwood Coast Chapter, are being awarded Medallion Awards this month. This prestigious recognition highlights the dedication of these schools in hosting international students who have been granted highly competitive, merit-based scholarships to study in the United States.
Abby Munro-Proulx, a dedicated volunteer with AFS-USA, elaborated on the significance of these awards. “These students are the leaders of tomorrow, active participants in wonderful programs like the State Department’s Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange, Future Leaders Exchange, and Youth Exchange and Study programs. By welcoming these international students, our local schools are not just educating them; they are fostering diplomatic bridges that leave a positive, lasting impression of the U.S. on these bright, young minds,” Munro-Proulx shared.
The schools recognized for their contributions are Arcata High School, where YES student Hamza Bayindir hails from Türkiye; Eureka High School, hosting YES student Patric Rasem Abadeer from Egypt; Fortuna High School, home to FLEX student Cristian Rosca of Romania; McKinleyville High School, with YES student Dea (Felyshita) Tea from Indonesia; and Six Rivers Charter High School, which is hosting YES student Katrin Arafat from Lebanon.
Adding to the excitement, Arcata High School showcases a commitment to cultural exchange by also hosting two juniors who participated in State Department outbound programs, CBYX and YES Abroad, during their 10th-grade years. One of these impressive students is even a finalist for the outbound CBYX program for the next academic year, highlighting the school’s ongoing commitment to fostering international relationships.
Once the awards are presented, each student will proudly hand over their Medallion certificates to their respective principals, marking a significant moment of achievement and recognition for both students and schools alike.
As we reflect on the importance of cultural exchanges and educational diplomacy, it’s clear that these efforts pave the way for a brighter, more interconnected future. This initiative is not just about learning; it’s about opening doors and creating lifelong friendships across borders.
