Exciting developments are underway at Rowan University, where two exceptional students, Sapjah Zapotitla and Mary Okolla, have been selected for the esteemed 2025 New Jersey Governor’s STEM Scholars program. This initiative is designed to nurture some of New Jersey’s most talented high school and college students by introducing them to the dynamic world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
In its mission to bridge the gap between academia and professional fields, the STEM Scholars program connects students with industry experts, providing invaluable insights into career pathways and essential professional development skills. Out of hundreds of applicants from all 21 counties of New Jersey, 111 students, including Zapotitla and Okolla, have been chosen to participate in this transformative program.
Zapotitla, a junior psychology major, was nominated by seasonal affective disorder. On the other hand, Okolla’s innovative project seeks to reduce deer-vehicle collisions near natural habitats by employing a device powered by artificial intelligence to detect animals.
“The Governor’s STEM Scholars program is pivotal in helping students achieve their career aspirations. It offers hands-on research experiences, mentorship from STEM professionals, and a glimpse into the real-world applications of science and technology. It empowers us to collaborate and envision impactful futures in the STEM arena,” Okolla concluded, highlighting the program’s significance.
With passions ignited and valuable skills honed, Zapotitla and Okolla are well-positioned to make meaningful contributions to the ever-evolving landscape of STEM fields. Their journeys serve as a reminder of the potential that lies within students when given the right opportunities.
