Jean Todt's Mission for Safer Roads: A Game-Changer for Madagascar

Jean Todt, the esteemed Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for Road Safety and former President of the FIA, is currently in Antananarivo, Madagascar, from April 8 to April 13. His visit has sparked much anticipation as he brings a wealth of experience aimed at tackling one of Madagascar’s pressing issues—road safety.

Upon his arrival, Todt was greeted warmly at Ivato airport by Madagascar’s Minister of Transport, Valéry Ramonjavelo, along with representatives from the United Nations. This friendly welcome sets the stage for a significant series of events scheduled during his visit. On April 11, Todt will officially launch a national road safety awareness campaign at the Carlton Hotel, a move that aims to spread awareness and instill a culture of safe driving practices among the Malagasy population.

This mission coincides with the ongoing global dialogue on road safety, following the fourth global ministerial conference held in Marrakech in February 2025. The critical goal is to reduce fatal road accidents across Madagascar by half—a challenge the government recognizes as a priority, having implemented several policies to bolster road safety in recent years.

Jean Todt’s presence in Madagascar serves as a fantastic opportunity to amplify these measures. Leveraging his global perspective and vast knowledge, he aims to engage not just the authorities but also technical and financial partners, plus everyday citizens. His mission is to underline the importance of effective traffic management and strict adherence to highway codes, which are essential elements in improving safety on the roads.

This visit represents more than just a campaign launch; it’s a call to action for all stakeholders in Madagascar. By rallying public support and enhancing government initiatives, there is a hopeful path ahead for safer roads. As Todt dives into this vital work, the energy in Madagascar is palpable, marking a significant chapter in the nation’s journey toward safer driving conditions.

Stay tuned for updates on this project that aims to transform Madagascar’s road safety landscape. We can all look forward to a time when road travel is safer and more secure for everyone in this beautiful island nation.
