By Africazine Contributor

Prepare to indulge in the artistic magic of cinema as Gibara welcomes the 19th edition of the International Poor Film Festival from April 15 to 19 in the picturesque coastal city of Holguin, Cuba. This year, the festival is shaking things up with the exciting integration of animation and experimental cinema into the prestigious Lucia Awards, showcasing a fresh perspective on storytelling and visual artistry.

Sergio Benvenuto Solas, the president of the organizing committee, shared his enthusiasm with the Cuban News Agency, highlighting how this innovative addition not only enriches the festival’s vision but also provides a welcoming platform for international producers in the animation and experimental genres. Isn’t it intriguing how an evolution in categories can lead to a more comprehensive celebration of creative expression?

This year’s lineup is particularly impressive, with over 500 works registered from talented filmmakers across the globe, including Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, and Turkey. From these submissions, an impressive 90 entries have been selected for the competition, encompassing a diverse array of features and shorts in fiction, documentary, animation, and of course, experimental film.

The festival is not just about participation; it boasts a star-studded lineup of jurors renowned in the film industry. Actress Jacqueline Arenal leads the fiction category jury, joined by impressive names like director Patricia Ramos, Moroccan producer Tarik El Idrissi, French makeup artist Saraï Fiszel, and Uruguayan filmmaker Yamandu Testa. Their expertise promises to elevate the selection process and bring profound attention to the artistry represented in each entry.

In the documentary sector, an equally esteemed jury will guide the selection process, featuring filmmaker Alejandra Guzzo from Uruguay and Pedro Ortega, a programmer from the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana, alongside Italian film professor Marco Neri.

The animation award will be presided over by producer Aramís Acosta, alongside respected film professor Alicia Tellería and screenwriter Laura Perez Gomez. Their collective experience is sure to highlight the innovation and creativity present in contemporary animation.

Inspired by the influential work of Humberto Solas, the Lucia Awards recognize not only the best films in various categories but also the contributions of prominent figures in Cuban cinema. As the festival approaches, film enthusiasts and creatives alike can look forward to a vibrant celebration of culture, artistry, and international collaboration in the heart of Cuba.
