Egypt Sets a Global Benchmark in Hepatitis C Elimination: A Model for Public Health

“Egypt Achieves Historic WHO Gold Status for Hepatitis C Elimination!”

In an impressive display of public health achievement, Egypt has made remarkable strides in the fight against hepatitis C, becoming the first country worldwide to be awarded the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Gold Tier status. This prestigious recognition highlights Egypt’s commitment to diagnosing and treating hepatitis C, with the country exceeding global benchmarks by diagnosing 87% of infected individuals and successfully treating an impressive 93% of those diagnosed.

The Gold Tier status is a significant milestone in the global health framework, awarded to nations that have diagnosed at least 80% of hepatitis C cases and treated 70%. Egypt’s figures not only meet but significantly surpass these criteria. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of WHO, commended Egypt for its tremendous progress, stating, “Egypt is an example to the world of what can be achieved with modern tools and political commitment at the highest level.”

This success story is a result of years of dedicated efforts, including comprehensive nationwide screening and treatment campaigns. The spotlight shone brightly on the ‘100 Million Seha’ initiative launched under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, which has fundamentally transformed public health in the nation. Since its inception, the initiative has successfully screened over 60 million residents and treated more than 4 million people, demonstrating a significant drop in hepatitis C infection rates, from 300 cases per 100,000 individuals in 2014 to just 9 per 100,000 in 2022.

The strategies employed by Egypt can serve as a model for other countries grappling with similar health challenges. This landmark achievement not only underscores the effectiveness of targeted health campaigns but also emphasizes the importance of strong political will in public health initiatives.

Egypt’s proactive approach to controlling and eliminating hepatitis C highlights the importance of comprehensive healthcare initiatives in combating infectious diseases. As the nation continues its quest for improved public health, there’s a clear message: with the right resources and commitment, significant global health challenges can be addressed effectively.
