According to the 2025 World Happiness Report, the significance of communal dining isn’t merely about food—it’s a vital component in crafting a joyful and satisfying life.

In Senegal, for instance, where hospitality runs deep, people enjoy an incredible 11.7 shared meals per week. This high number significantly contributes to the nation’s reputation for strong community ties and collective happiness. Comparatively, Swedes share 9.5 meals, while in the U.S., this number drops to just 3.2. Even Japan, known for its rich dining culture, sees only 3.7 meals shared weekly.

Research by Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, the editor of the report and director at the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, suggests that the frequency of shared meals profoundly affects our overall wellbeing. In fact, it’s been established that “the optimal number of shared meals is 13 out of 14” each week. De Neve notes that the social aspects of life can be as important—if not more so—than wealth or health when it comes to personal happiness.

This emphasis on social interactions is particularly critical in the United States, where there’s been a staggering 54% increase in dining alone over the past two decades. With current workplace norms evolving toward solitary lunches at desks, De Neve emphasizes that moments spent with colleagues are essential. He advocates for proactive socializing, whether it’s over lunch or even a casual coffee break, stressing that these interactions contribute to a supportive workplace culture.

So, how can we integrate more social dining into our routines? Consider organizing lunch outings with coworkers, inviting friends over for dinner, or participating in community meals. Each extra meal shared signals not just nourishment but also connection—a vital ingredient for happiness.
