Dozens of iconic film posters are set to go under the hammer this month, making waves in the collectibles market. An American collector, Dwight Cleveland, is parting with a stunning collection of rare movie posters that spans over 125 years of cinematic history. The collection, which includes some of the most recognizable films such as “King Kong,” “Casablanca,” and “2001: A Space Odyssey,” has recently been showcased in major cities like London, New York, and Chicago. Now, all eyes are on Dallas, Texas, where the auction will take place on March 27 and 28, hosted by Heritage Auctions.
Cleveland, a passionate collector who has spent over half a century amassing these treasures, cherishes each item as a uniquely curated piece of art. “I cherish every single one of them because every one of them was hand-picked,” Cleveland shared, making it clear that his connection to these posters runs deep. Each piece reflects not just a film’s marketing genius but also the social and artistic context of its time.
This auction comes after Cleveland’s successful exhibition of the collection at various prestigious institutions, including the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. Joe Maddalena, Heritage’s vice president, praises the collection as “the best of the best.” Some of the standout pieces, such as the 1933 “King Kong” poster featuring actress Fay Wray, have estimated values soaring between ,000 and ,000.
Cleveland’s journey into the world of collectible film art began in an unexpected way—thanks to an art teacher’s eclectic classroom decor back in school. “We walked by these every day,” Cleveland reminisces, noting how he would tease his teacher about his collection. However, one lobby card from the 1929 film “Wolf Song” caught his eye and sparked a lifelong passion for collecting movie memorabilia.
In addition to the high-value items, the auction features a variety of posters with estimated values ranging from ,000 to ,000, potentially bringing in over a million dollars altogether. After the auction, Cleveland will still possess around 10,000 lobby cards and 500 posters, which he may consider donating or auctioning in the future.
While it’s bittersweet for Cleveland to part with these beloved items, he takes comfort in knowing they will be cherished by other collectors. “I’ll be sad to see some of them go, but I’m happy they’ll be with someone who appreciates them,” he concluded.
This auction not only celebrates cinema history but also reminds us of the powerful connection between art and storytelling. If you’re a movie buff or a collector, this is an event you won’t want to miss!
