Empowering Youth Through Financial Literacy: Yellow Cowries Celebrates Global Money Week 2025 in Lagos
In a vibrant celebration of financial education, Yellow Cowries brought together students, educational advocates, and financial experts in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, to observe Global Money Week (GMW) 2025. This year’s festivities kicked off with an energizing walkathon that united secondary school students from across Lagos State, alongside representatives from Yellow Cowries, CFG Africa, Cowrywise, and officials from the Lagos State Ministry of Basic & Secondary Education. The atmosphere buzzed with enthusiasm as participants championed financial literacy in an impressive display of unity and purpose.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the 6th edition of the Yellow Cowries Financial Literacy Brainee Competition. This competition showcased the effectiveness of Yellow Cowries’ educational approach, which focuses on practical knowledge and skills. Student teams participated in a challenging financial case study competition where they demonstrated their command of the proprietary PSI (Plan-Save-Invest) curriculum. Their ability to offer real-world solutions to complex financial scenarios left a lasting impression on judges and spectators alike.
Mr. Akindele Ogundepo, Head of Asset Management at CFG Africa, praised the students for their ingenuity and depth of understanding. “What we witnessed today is nothing short of extraordinary,” he remarked, highlighting how these young minds are not merely retaining information, but are effectively applying concepts with remarkable sophistication.
Additionally, participants engaged in the PSI Card Games tournament, a groundbreaking initiative utilizing gamification to enhance financial literacy. This unique approach harnesses the power of gameplay to make learning about finances enjoyable and relatable for youth, ensuring that valuable lessons are memorable. Such innovative methodologies show that financial education can be both fun and effective.
Cowrywise CEO, Mr. Razaq Ahmed, also emphasized the importance of early financial understanding. “It’s crucial for young people to grasp the benefits of sound financial advice. Establishing a culture of saving and investing from a young age will help them safeguard their financial futures and sidestep common pitfalls,” he shared. This sentiment resonated deeply, as participants acknowledged the importance of preparing for a financially sound future.
As Global Money Week continues to promote financial education worldwide, events like these underscore the importance of equipping the next generation with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive. With organizations like Yellow Cowries leading the charge, the future of financial literacy in Nigeria appears bright.
