As Ramadan approaches, the Egyptian government is making headlines for its generous support of families in need. This year, they are distributing an impressive EGP 300 bonus to over 4.7 million families enrolled in the Takaful and Karama cash transfer programme, amounting to a substantial total of EGP 1.5 billion. Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk has announced that these funds have been allocated directly to the Ministry of Social Solidarity, following explicit directives from the presidency to bolster social assistance during this holy month.
But that’s not all—beneficiaries of the Takaful and Karama programme will also see a 25% increase in cash assistance starting in April, which is set to cost around EGP 13 billion through June 2026. This initiative reflects an ongoing commitment to uplift low-income families and ensure they have the resources they need during Ramadan and the upcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
These updates were unveiled during a meeting where Ahmed Kouchouk and Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy reviewed the execution of various social protection measures. With the aim of enhancing the living conditions of the most vulnerable groups, these financial aids are designed to lend a helping hand when it’s needed the most.
Launched in 2014 with an initial budget of EGP 3.5 billion to support 1.7 million families, the Takaful and Karama programme has grown significantly, a testament to the government’s dedication to social welfare. This May, the Ministry of Social Solidarity will commemorate the programme’s tenth anniversary, marking a decade of impactful change. Recognized as one of the most effective social protection schemes in the Arab world, it features a flexible design that allows for the inclusion of new families and the adjustment of existing beneficiaries based on eligibility criteria.
As Egypt gears up for this festive season, the Takaful and Karama programme continues to show that it’s more than just a social safety net; it’s a lifeline for many families across the nation. This reinforced commitment to social welfare highlights Egypt’s progress in combating poverty and promoting inclusivity, making it a focus of pride as we celebrate not only the holy month of Ramadan but also the spirit of giving that it embodies.
