In a commendable partnership aimed at enhancing urban mobility, SYSTRA has concluded a monumental phase in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for Douala, Cameroon. This project, generously financed by the French Development Agency (AFD), stands as a testament to collaborative innovation in public transport development. By emphasizing inclusivity, SYSTRA has managed to devise a mobility plan that reflects the needs and aspirations of the Douala Urban Community.
Prisca MBIMI OLINGA, the project director from the Douala Urban Community, shared her thoughts, praising the SYSTRA team’s commitment and expertise: “Their availability, ability to listen and share, scientific objectivity, humility, and interpretative skills enabled SYSTRA to deliver a credible and realistic SUMP.” This spirit of cooperation has resulted in an innovative blueprint that prioritizes sustainable transportation, a crucial factor in enhancing the quality of life for Douala’s residents.
The initiative doesn’t merely stop at developing plans; it extends its reach into practical applications. Steven Lain, Service Director for Bus Services and Operations funded by the UK Department for Transport, expressed gratitude for SYSTRA’s role in the Bus Service Improvement Programme. He commented on how their collaboration infused the local team with fresh insights, leading to significant operational enhancements: “Your continued support, assistance and integration into our local team have enabled us to achieve impressive improvements.” This collaborative approach has fostered excellent relationships with operators, showcasing the power of teamwork in enhancing urban transport.
As cities worldwide grapple with rapid population growth and increasing demand for better public transport, Douala is setting an example by prioritizing sustainable solutions. The SUMP not only represents a strategic response to urban challenges but also aims to promote economic development through improved accessibility. By creating a comprehensive transport network, Douala stands to enhance its status as a vibrant hub for business and tourism in Central Africa.
Looking to the future, the ongoing discussions around urban mobility and sustainability will undoubtedly shape the destinies of cities across Africa and beyond. Douala’s proactive strategy is not just about immediate improvements; it’s about laying down a foundation for generations to come. This aligns with a broader global trend toward sustainable cities and urban resilience—a goal that countless urban centers are striving toward.
