Embracing the Blessings of Ramadan: Searching for Serenity and Connection While Abroad

Embracing Ramadan: A Journey of Adaptation and Community Abroad

Ramadan has always held a special place in my heart, especially during my childhood in Morocco, where the holy month transforms everyday life into a vibrant festival filled with warmth, family gatherings, and delicious feasts. Each year’s preparations seem to last for months, culminating in Iftar gatherings that bring families together as they break their fast with scrumptious home-cooked meals. However, as I embarked on my academic journey at Richmond American University London, I found myself far from that familiarity. My first Ramadan away from home turned out to be a mix of excitement and a whole new set of challenges.

Living abroad during Ramadan made me feel a bit of culture shock. My cooking skills weren’t quite up to the task, and without my family’s bustling kitchen, breaking my fast often meant opting for takeout with friends. As delightful as the camaraderie was, I missed the comforting aroma of Moroccan cuisine and the intimacy of shared meals with loved ones. However, as the days rolled by, I realized change was not only possible but could also be quite rewarding.

I started to explore simple recipes, buying my own ingredients, and experimenting with cooking. Though my dishes were far from perfect, each culinary attempt became a step towards independence and a personal connection to my traditions, making Iftar feel fulfilling once more. Inviting friends over and sharing our meals fostered a sense of community that transformed our gatherings into meaningful rituals, similar to those of home.

Navigating university life while fulfilling my spiritual obligations also proved challenging, but organization became my ally. I made sure to carry a prayer rug and outfit, allowing myself to pray regularly on campus, whether in a designated prayer room or a quiet corner. Initially intimidating, praying in these unfamiliar spaces soon became a source of pride and comfort.

Fasting amidst a hectic schedule left me seeking quick sources of energy, and I quickly discovered the power of dates—not only are they a Sunnah to break fast with, but they also provided a delightful energy boost. My suhoor routine transformed into an essential part of my day, featuring light yet satisfying meals. Along with fruits and yogurt, a strong cup of coffee helped keep me alert during long lecture days, while also allowing me to fit in necessary tasks like stretching and light study.

What I found to be the most enriching aspect of my Ramadan experience abroad was the newfound perspective I developed. Ramadan extends far beyond abstaining from food and drink; it’s a time of faith, forgiveness, and community. I made it my mission to engage in small acts of kindness, support those in need, and connect with my family back home — using technology to bridge the distance.

The diverse community at Richmond University played a pivotal role in my journey. Meeting other Muslim students, sharing our experiences, and breaking fast together made me feel anchored in my beliefs, reminding me that I was part of a larger community of faith.

As Eid approached—the grand celebration marking the end of Ramadan—I felt a mixture of nostalgia and joy. Dressing up in traditional attire, I celebrated with friends, finding joy in sharing our cultures even if the grandeur of home was distant. Though I missed the early morning prayers and family visits, I kept my spirits high, knowing that the essence of Eid was still alive within me.

Reflecting on my journey, I can certainly say that while observing Ramadan abroad comes with its challenges, it has also been a powerful teacher of resilience and adaptability. I forged new traditions, cultivated friendships, and deepened my faith, even when feelings of isolation crept in. Each experience served as a reminder that regardless of where I was in the world, Ramadan would always hold a significant place in my heart.

With the next Ramadan approaching, I feel poised for even greater growth. I’m eager to deepen my spirituality and embrace the unique practices that make this sacred month resonate with joy and connection—taking what I initially viewed as challenges and transforming them into cherished blessings.
